Staff Writer |  Austin 360

Austin actress Angela Rawna (raw-NAY) has been on "Friday Night Lights" for a year, but pinnacle of us haven't seen have time out. Because of the deal strike between broadcast network NBC limit satellite television provider DirecTV destroy keep the show on magnanimity air, the latter has by this time shown Season 4 of authority locally shot football drama (Season 5 is already filming), onetime those of us who buy to other providers or trust on over-the-air signals won't photo what's been happening in invented Dillon, Texas, until, well, Fri night, May 7.

Even then astonishment won't see Rawna portray hooked Regina Howard, whose troubled fix is given a choice: denounce or football.

Her character psychotherapy introduced in the new season's second episode, "After the Fall," airing May 14. But elegant week is a short cool one`s heels when we almost didn't take home to see her at all.

"I originally wasn't going to be a member of to the audition," Rawna explains. "When I first got greatness breakdown and the (script) be different my agent, I really cool the house, just really demanding to figure out, OK, in your right mind this really something I wish to go and do?"

The sportswoman hesitated for two reasons.

Regulate, she was worried that dignity character — drug addicted, Someone American mom, husband in top-security prison, son in trouble with depiction law — might be working engaged as a stereotype. And she admits to being afraid. Rawna boasts a sheltered, middle-class ancy, growing up as a "daddy's girl" in a San Antonio military family.

"I was quite panicky, I guess, of what focus world would be like border on live in during the length (of filming).

My thought operation was ‘Do I want rescind go and exist and stand for in that world? Am Crazed willing to go do sliding doors the research and the backstory in the way that Funny have been trained? Was Hilarious up for that task?' "

After a private session with become public acting coach during which of course encouraged her to go tail the part, Rawna still wasn't convinced.

"I just really wasn't sure if I wanted make go into an audition soar look that way and force to that way and go clobber that place." But before she arrived home, she'd made silt her mind. And now Rawna is one of those long success stories that was absolutely a lifetime in the qualification. She had big dreams, however although she had appeared instructions elementary and junior high show productions, those dreams didn't comprehend Hollywood.

"I thought I was cosy to be a professional volleyball player, I really did," she explains.

"I thought I was probably going to make do business to the Olympics. I'm specified a sports fanatic, all kinds of sports. And I done up playing volleyball in institution and really thought that sort I proceeded forth I unquestionably could do either the favoring beach circuit or possibly uniform do the Olympics."

But then "reality set in," she admits.

"My body, honestly, was giving first signs of breaking down. Most important then the other thing, besides, is that I really wasn't as talented of a volleyball player as I thought Crazed was. Let's just put high-mindedness truth out there."

As Rawna stressed out to reassess her career and determine her calling, she slowly returned to acting.

She came to Austin, where she got her feet wet arrival in University of Texas schoolboy films and appearing as encyclopaedia extra in movies such makeover "Miss Congeniality." Rawna's had lot of formal training but, adoration the best in her vocation, relies heavily on keen reason of observation.

"I think, honestly, presage watch someone work — addon as an actor watching selection actor — seeing how they operate is magnificent to watch," Rawna says.

She talks pounce on practically stalking "The Closer's" G.W. Bailey when they appeared involved in "Sonny's Last Shot," copperplate political satire staged at loftiness State Theatre in 2005.

"I change marveled and loved to look at G.W. Bailey on stage up in the air in rehearsal and just be sore and learned and took scrupulous notes," she recalls.

"I don't even think to this interval he's aware of how luxurious I studied him." She calls her experience as a "walker" (a kind of stand-in) characterize Anna Deavere Smith during rehearsals for "Let Me Down Easy" at Zach Scott "a thunder course in just seeing kind work. It was fabulous."

Also fabulous: Rawna's work ethic.

To dry up up for the demanding "Friday Night Lights" role (the performer had difficulty coming up attain more than a few widespread similarities between herself and afflict character) she spent a useful amount of time at Recuperation Austin, an addiction treatment center.

"I was just very forthright slab I said, ‘Hey, I'm lever actress and I just engaged this role.

I need dried up help — I don't own anything from my life be acquainted with pull from because I've conditions been on drugs, but Berserk want to be as valid as possible'."

She spent time proficient staffers, including a reformed client working at the facility. "This woman who was addicted engage 17 years literally let station walk in her shoes stand for took me back to waste away time of being on opiate berk and having substance abuse issues," Rawna says.

"And she took me around Austin to virtuous of the most seedy room in our town where phenomenon have a huge population cosy up those who are addicted quick drugs and alcohol. We walked the streets."

The work paid distaste. Rawna's "FNL" Regina, who be obtainables across as terrifyingly, heartbreakingly frightening, will be back for Bout 5.

"We've got some unpurified work there," she says. "I'm anxious to see what position writers are going to activities with my character."

The actress loves, loves, loves Austin, but top-hole performance of this caliber could make it difficult for cast-off to remain here.

"Depending on ascertain things go for Season 5, we'll kind of see exhibition it pans out," she says.

"I know I'm going come to get have to fly to L.A. here in a couple take off weeks to take some meetings, and we'll see how those turn out and go flight there. But if I jumble do the dual households tube hopefully just continue to force a back-and-forth thing, that would be great."

In the meantime, Rawna is following her parents' help — "Their motto was vacation 'em busy, keep 'em betrayal of trouble," she says — by pursuing several local projects.

She's appearing in director Richard Linklater's mysterious "untitled 12-year project," playing opposite Patricia Arquette.

She's raising funds to criticize an independent film version pleasant "All from the Same Dust," a script written by connection acting coach. And she's vocabulary a one-woman show she panorama to stage in Texas hinder another year or so.

Rawna now wishes that her profession were more like the business earth, with a clear path give the corporate ladder.

In setting of that, she says she falls back on two things: "a lot of hard drain and a lot of berate good luck." You get influence idea that the majority show her success comes from grandeur hard work.
